قصة الفيلم:

شيكاغو ، 1968. بينما تستعد المدينة والأمة على حافة الاضطرابات السياسية ، تُعقد ربة منزل في الضواحي (إليزابيث بانكس) حياة عادية مع زوجها وابنتها. عندما يؤدي حمل Joy إلى حالة قلب تهدد الحياة ، يجب عليها التنقل في مؤسسة طبية ذات الذكور غير راغبة في إنهاء حملها من أجل إنقاذ حياتها. تقودها رحلتها للحصول على حل إلى فرجينيا (سيجورني ويفر) ، وهي شركة مستقلة من الرؤية ملتزمة بصحة المرأة ، وجوين (وونمي موساكو) ، وهو ناشط يحلم باليوم الذي ستحصل فيه جميع النساء على الإجهاض ، بغض النظر عن قدرتها لدفع. فرح مستوحى من عملهم ، وتقرر توحيد الجهود معهم ، ووضع كل جانب من جوانب حياتها على المحك.
